Apple Cobbler or Dump Cake

Apple Cobbler

A very easy dump cake using just a few ingredients, this dump cake was our dessert at Thanksgiving Dinner this year. It can be made with fruit pie filling of any variety. Since I watch my sugar intake, I used a can of Duncan Hines No Sugar Added Apple Pie Filling. To make your own pie filling, stew 2 cups chopped apples with a cup of sugar and a dash of salt. We liked this dump cake so much that the following week, I made a peach dump cake using no sugar added canned peach slices.

Ingredients
1 (20 oz.) can Duncan Hines apple pie filling
2 tsp. vanilla extract, divided
2 tsp. almond extract, divided
1 cup self-rising flour (or 1 cup all-purpose flour + 2 tsp. baking powder)
1/2 tsp. cinnamon powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 egg, beaten
1 stick butter, melted

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Place butter in baking pan and melt in oven while it's preheating, remove from oven and set aside.
  3. Empty contents of pie filling into a mixing bowl and add half the vanilla and almond extracts, stir and set aside.
  4. Stir flour with sugar, cinnamon powder and salt until evenly distributed.
  5. Add beaten egg, milk, remaining vanilla and almond extracts to flour and stir together until it forms a batter similar to the consistency of a pancake batter.
  6. Pour batter over melted butter in baking pan, top evenly with tablespoonfuls of apple pie filing and run a fork through the batter.
  7. Bake in oven at 350F for 45 minutes until top is brown and bubbly.
  8. Cool at room temperature before slicing.
Serve with Cool Whip or ice cream.
